The article I read was "Mutimedia Encourages New Learning Styles." This articel is about how technology has changed the way students learn. The most important change that I read in this article was the students can now can content on a subject from anywhere on the net rather than just their teacher. This is important because it shows different opnions on a ceratin subject rather than just the teacher's.

I read the article Technology and Academic Achievement by Les Foltos. There has been a $5 billion/year increase for the use of technology in classrooms. Parents and educators have questioned whether this increase of technology in the classroom is working. New evidence of published researchers shows that the technology can play a positive role in academic achievement. Several organizations have documneted that there has been a positive change on academic achievement in the classrooms. There are two studies that are researching the correlation between academic achievement and technology. One study concluded that for 4th and 8th graders technology has "positive benefits" on achievement as measured in NAEP's mathematics test. Clinton Administration noted there was too little research being conducted on the impact of technology in the classroom. Researchers are finding that it is difficult to isolate technology as a variable in good instruction, but they are finding that in the right circumstances, technology plays a positive role in enhancing academic achievement.

I read "Take Back the Afternoon: Preserving the landscape of Childhood in Spite of Computers" by David Sobel. This article addresses the issue of the amount of screen time young children are experiencing, specifically in relation to computers. It looks at what is lost to young children in terms of playing outside and actively using their bodies and imaginations. It talked about the usefulness of computers in educational settings, but also reinforced that they should be used to supplement the educational material, rather than being the main focus. It is easy for children to get caught up in the use of computers with the ability to get instant feedback rewards and also to be able to communicate with people all over the world, but other aspects of education and learning are important also and shouldn't be lost in the process. I found this article very practical and appropriate; computers and technology are very useful and open up a whole new realm of opportunities with learning, but they should be used to supplement the learning and curriculum, not be the main focus, especially for elementary students.

LisaThe article "Technology and Academic Achievement" questions the use of technology (particularly computers) within the classroom setting. Studies have shown that use of technology when partnered with higher thinking skills improves students' understanding and test scores, while the use of technology in furthering lower level thinking skills decreases student test scores and understanding. The thing I found really interesting about these studies is that while many schools have put forth a great deal of money into technology, very few schools actually make use of such technology to its full potential.

The article I read was "Instant Messaging: Friend or For of Student Writing?" It talked about the pros and cons of using text messaging in the classroom. Some pros is that it gets students to free write easier, the downfall can be that students get used to text lingo. I read the article "Learning with the Internet" by Muthu Kumar. It talked about inquirey, communication and construction concerning the internet. Inquiry has to do with how the internet facilitates finding sources of information appropriate to a task. Communication is a remarkable tool for rapid communication. This could be in the form of e-mail, mailing lists, newsgroups, chat and videoconferencing. Construction promotes learning by scaffolding varieties of authentic learning activities for students. The internet has been beneficial in the educational domain as a repository for information.
